Former U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, 84, suffered an injury during a trip to Luxembourg and has been admitted to a hospital for evaluation, her office confirmed in a statement on Friday. Pelosi, the first woman to ever hold the position of House Speaker, was traveling with a bipartisan Congressional delegation to mark the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge when the incident occurred.
According to Pelosi’s spokesperson, Ian Krager, Pelosi is receiving excellent care from medical professionals. Despite the injury, she remains committed to her work. “Speaker Emerita Pelosi is currently receiving excellent treatment from doctors and medical professionals. She continues to work,” Krager stated.
Pelosi, who stepped down from her role as Speaker in 2023, is still an active member of the House and was reelected in November for another two-year term beginning on January 3. She has been a key player in major legislative efforts, including the passage of the $1 trillion infrastructure bill under President Joe Biden in 2022. Pelosi is also known for her confrontations with former President Donald Trump, notably tearing up his State of the Union address in 2020.
Pelosi’s long tenure in the U.S. House spans seven presidential administrations. She first served as Speaker from 2007 to 2011 and regained the role in 2019 after the Democratic Party retook control of the House. Following the 2022 midterms, Republicans regained the House majority, and they will hold a narrow majority when President-elect Donald Trump returns to the White House in 2025.
