Ryan Nobles of NBC News recently reported that Donald Trump is facing serious warnings from Republican lawmakers about some of his Cabinet nominees, with concerns over their confirmation hearings. These lawmakers are cautioning that if individuals like Fox News personality Pete Hegseth and former Rep. Tulsi Gabbard proceed with their nominations, they could face intense scrutiny and difficult questioning during their nationally televised confirmation hearings.
Speaking on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” with host Willie Geist, Nobles explained that while these Republicans want Trump to succeed, they also want the best people in his Cabinet. They believe the confirmation process will be a challenge for some nominees, especially given the history of controversial media coverage about them. “They want him to have the best people around him in these Cabinet posts when he takes office,” Nobles said, but the concern is that the nominees may face too much scrutiny under hostile questioning from both Democrats and potentially even fellow Republicans.
Nobles highlighted that the strategy for dealing with difficult nominations is often a behind-the-scenes conversation. “They talk to the administration, they talk to these sherpas working with the candidates and they say, ‘You know what? It’s just not going to happen,'” he explained. The idea is to avoid a public, contentious hearing by quietly persuading a nominee to bow out before being forced to undergo a brutal process. He further elaborated on this approach, recalling how it worked with Matt Gaetz, Trump’s failed nominee for attorney general, who ultimately withdrew from consideration after it became clear he would not secure the necessary votes. Trump was reportedly made aware of this behind-the-scenes message.
The message here is clear: some Republican lawmakers are deeply concerned about the consequences of certain nominees, and while they want Trump to have capable officials in his Cabinet, they also want to avoid a public spectacle that could damage his presidency before it even begins.
