Webb County Judge Tano Tijerina of Texas announced his switch to the Republican Party, joining Florida Representative Susan Valdes in a wave of defections among some former Democrats. Tijerina explained his decision during an interview with Fox News, citing the Democratic Party’s “radical shift to the left” and what he views as its growing embrace of “woke” ideologies.
“I’ve always been a Conservative,” Tijerina said, adding that the party’s stance on border security and threats to the oil and gas industry in South Texas were significant factors in his decision. “From the boys playing in girls’ sports and whatnot, it’s something that I have to do. It’s something dear to my heart, and I have a moral compass that I need to continue moving forward.”
After much thought, prayer, and conversations with my family and friends, I have made the decision to switch to the Republican party.

Our shared values here in South Texas — hard work, faith, family, and freedom — are no longer pillars in the Democrat party and I want to be… pic.twitter.com/OJzGT0uVW1
Tijerina emphasized the distinction between national and local Democrats, noting that many Democrats in South Texas are “Conservative, for the most part,” and do not align with the policies of the national Democratic Party. He also expressed optimism about President-elect Donald Trump’s upcoming second term, particularly regarding his anticipated border control policies.
The switch reflects a broader trend of political realignment in traditionally Democratic strongholds like South Texas, where issues such as energy, immigration, and cultural values have created divides between local and national party platforms.
